LET'S ALL GO TO THE DRIVE-IN!

I just wanted to make a quick post about my birthday presents. I got some dvds from my sister-in-law (HOSTEL, a Doctor Who episode, some old Hanna-Barbera GODZILLA shows), gift certificates and money, etc. TY HUDSON gave me a 12" talking Frank the Bunny figure from DONNIE DARKO! It's awesome!

My favorite gift was from my hubby, CVK. I grew up in the midwest and most weekends in the summer, my folks would load up the car, hiding the big container of popcorn so we didn't have to buy any at the concession stand, and off we'd go to the local drive-in theater.

There's something special about watching a movie outdoors. I don't know if it's the foreign environment, which is exciting, or hearing the sound echoing across a large area, but man, I loved it. That's where I saw so many horror movies of the 70's, and it was the best venue for them. I remember going into the concession stand and seeing the garish posters for the movies that were Coming Soon: NIGHT CALL NURSES, COUNT YORGA VAMPIRE, FROGS and WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS are still etched in my brain.

So in 2004, my husband got me a video projector and stapled two white tableclothes to the back fence where I'd project movies while sitting in the hot tub or swimming in the pool. It was sweet. But the Santa Ana winds made short work of them. This year, CVK went one step better. He got me a bigger screen made of actual cinematic screen material and a rugged metal frame to hang it on. It hangs on hooks on the back fence and can be taken down when the weather gets bad (which is rare) if it needs protection.

I watched EQUINOX the first night it was up, and I know I'm going to get a lot more use out of it this summer. Thanks, honey!

"The movie starts in 10 minutes..."
