NO ON PROP 8

Election Day is only a week away.  I've not talked politics on this blog at all, and I think at this point, you know who you're voting for to lead this country for the next 4 years.

So I'm going to talk about Prop 8.  You know, the right for same-sex couples to marry.  Some people don't like the idea.  Even some gays.  I've been told that marriage for gays assimilates our culture into "straight" culture.  I've been told that because gay relationships are notoriously short-lived, that same-sex marriage will just result in same-sex divorce.  I've been told by some gays that they don't want to get married (So don't!
I've never heard of a single case of a gay shotgun wedding).

I've been with CVK for over 12 years now.  We are registered domestic partners, which gives me some of the same rights as marriage.  But it's not the same.  We want to get married, but we are waiting until after Election Day to see if we will still be able to.  A civil union is out of the question.  It's not the same.  We want the same basic right that other Americans have and will settle for nothing less.  This is about equality for everyone.  Banning same-sex marriage is being told you are not worthy, and that makes you a second-class citizen.

Vote NO on PROP 8.  Last week, a local TV news station interviewed some gay men in San Francisco who were voting Yes on Prop 8.  The interviewer asked them why they were voting against a measure that would re-write California's consititution (the "Yes on 8" campaign has been heavily funded by the notoriously gay Mormon church to the tune of 6 million dollars) and deny marriage to gay people.  The SF men stopped, blinked and said, "Yes on Prop 8 is FOR the ban?"  Obviously, they were not very well informed.

A funny story related to the above:  a couple of weeks ago, there was a party held by the Free Speech Coalition (to which I was NOT invited, even though Red Devil Entertainment is a member).  CHI CHI LARUE was hosting it.  TREVOR KNIGHT was in the audience and when Chi Chi yelled about voting No on Prop 8, Trevor started booing.  He said Chi Chi whipped her head to at him to see who was booing, and every time she said to vote No, Trevor would boo again.  Later, one of Trevor's friends asked him why he was against gay marriage.  "I'm not against gay marriage!  I'm for it!  Didn't you hear me booing everytime Chi Chi said to vote No?"  His friend said, yes, they did hear him booing, as he was the only one in the huge crowd who was, but that he was mistaken—No is FOR gay marriage, Yes is AGAINST it.  Trevor was shocked, horrified and incredibly embarrassed.  So you see, it's best to make sure you know what you're voting for.  lol.

So here's the rundown:  gay marriage will not destroy gay culture.  Straight follow our trends just like the rest of the world follows American culture.  Sure, some marriages will end in divorce.  So what?  Why should that stop people from getting married?  And finally, if you don't want to get married, then don't.  But don't deny the right to those of us who do.

If Prop 8 is defeated, then you can expect CVK and I to tie the knot in 2009.  I hope you will soon be reading here about our wedding plans.

PLEASE VOTE NO ON PROP 8.

JBK
